Exclusive: Bachmann Reception on ‘Fallon’—Unfunny, Guys

Commentator Megan Carpentier offers five songs The Roots—famous for their satiric walk-on song picks on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon”—could have used to “snark” Michele Bachmann without being sexist.

Fans of Jimmy Fallon—or at least his house band The Roots—were waiting with no small amount of anticipation Monday night just before Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN) took the stage. Roots drummer Questlove first teased their introductory song selection on Twitter in the afternoon, saying, ”aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title.” The song? A cover of Fishbone’s “Lyin’ Ass Bitch.”

Fallon’s initial response the morning after was  “@questlove is grounded,” though he later took to Twitter to apologize for what he termed “the intro mess.” But calling a guest—let alone a seated U.S. congresswoman who is one of a small number of Republican women to ever run for the Presidency—a “lying bitch” is both sexist and unfunny. It’s not even what one could legitimately call “snark,”which is generally understood to mean a sarcastic comment or snide remark. Calling a powerful woman a “bitch” because you don’t like her views or her attitude is pretty much standard issue sexism—just ask Hillary Clinton, for instance.

Well said.  TFW concurs.  To continue reading visit The Women’s Media Center.

In case you missed the lyrics, here they are:

Lalalala Lalalalala
Lalalala Lalalalala
Lalalala Lalalalala
Lalalala Lalalalala

I knew her and she knew me
When she asks me to introduce him
When I did we were three
Until she tried to seduce him

I really thought our love was much too strong
But that little slut just proved us wrong
I still care and that’s my fatal flaw
Cause sharing you will surely kill us all!

She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala
She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala
She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala
She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala

You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she loves you but you know she don’t care
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she needs you but you know she really don’t care
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she loves you but you know she don’t care
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she needs you but you know she really don’t care

She swears that her heart’s for you
And she swears that her love never ends
She swears that she’s all for you
As she messes around with your friends

I really thought our love was much too strong
But that little slut just proved us wrong
I still care and that’s my fatal flaw
Cause sharing you will surely kill us all !!

She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala
She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala
She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala
She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala

You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she loves you but you know she don’t care
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she needs you but you know she really don’t care

She’s just a…
Lalalala Lalalalala

You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she loves you but you know she doesn’t
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she says she loves you but you know she doesn’t
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
You know she’s got you pussy-whipped but you’re not sorry!
You’re nothing but a little lyin’ ass bitch !
She’s just so full of shit…

this is dedicated
to lyin’ ass Yvette

The lyin’, piece of, sack of shit
Slut trash can scummy
Dirt bag… Biiiitch ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I'm really happy this issue was raised — though I didn't see the episode the night this incident occurred, I did watch clips after the controversy surfaced. This isn't a popular thing to confront because we love Jimmy Fallon and we love the Roots — but such actions need to be confronted. Regardless of her political convictions, no woman deserves to be "welcomed" in such a way. And really, Roots? Really Jimmy? Can you look me in the eye and tell me you would have had the same intro for Herman Cain or Rick Parry?
