We join millions of Americans in expressing our profound sorrow tonight that despite recantations and substantial doubt concerning his guilt, the state of Georgia has proceeded with the execution of Troy Anthony Davis. But we must also wonder what amount of damage has been done to the idea of justice and freedom, both for the individual and in the abstract, when the Supreme Court of the United States is apparently not enough impressed by new statements from several witnesses in the case to stay the execution. How do a million or more voices across the United States and the globe fall silent to the ears of our representatives, those dedicated to and entrusted with upholding and protecting our rights?
Our prayers extend to the family of Troy Davis.
