Photographer Jon Crispin was given free reign in the 1980s to go through the countless belongings left behind in New York’s abandoned asylums. He has photographed suitcases and other personal belongings of men and women who were committed to psychiatric care indefinitely by the state. He estimates the belongings date back from anywhere between 1910 to the 1960s, right before the Kennedy administration began shutting down institutions to better integrate the social outcasts into mainstream society.
